Pearls: The Gem of the Sea
Different types of oysters produce different pearl colors, sizes and shapes. Different types of oysters produce different pearl colors, sizes and shapes. Different types of oysters produce different pearl colors, sizes and shapes.
Natural Pearls
A natural pearl is created organically when an irritant accidentally finds itself inside the oyster's soft tissue muscle. Irritants, such as seawater, sand, or dust, activate the oyster's defense mechanisms, causing it to produce layers of secretion. The secretion, or nacre, slowly develops into a natural pearl. Because of this, Natural Pearls are much rare and more valuable.
Cultured Pearls
Most pearls on the market today are cultured. A cultured pearl is a natural pearl produced by an oyster or mollusk, but with human assistance. The survival rates of Cultured Pearls are much higher because they are created in controlled environments. Pearl farmers are then able to produce high-quality, authentic pearls at a higher rate than what can be obtained by oyster divers. The two main types of cultured pearls are freshwater and saltwater pearls.
There Four main types of cultured pearls:
Akoya Pearls
Akoya pearls are the pearls with the highest luster and shine of all cultured pearls on the market. They are perfectly round and white.
Natural Colors: Cream, White
Sizes: 5 mm to 11 mm
Parent: Pinctada Fucata Mollusk
Freshwater Pearls
In the 1990s, Freshwater pearls emerged as the new rivals to Akoya pearls. They also come in round, white gems, much like Akoya pearls. However, Freshwater pearl jewelry offers the widest selections of pearl colors, shapes, and sizes than any other cultured type.
Natural Colors: Cream, White
Sizes: 2 mm to 15 mm
Parent: Hyriopsis Cumingii or Hybrid Mollusk
Four Criteria Determine The Value of A Pearl:
Shape
The rounder the gem, the more valuable the pearl because oysters rarely create perfectly round gemstones. Round pearls are higher in price than other pearl shapes because they are the rarest.
Surface
Pearls are not flawless. A living creature creates each one, so imperfections are expected. However, the fewer visible flaws, nicks, cracks, or other blemishes, the more valuable and pricier the pearl will be.
Luster
High luster means excellent value. When a mirror-like sheen and shine is visible on the surface of the pearl, this is called luster. The higher quality the gem, the more luster and "pop" is noticeable by the naked eye.
Size
Finally, size comes into play. Size is the most critical factor in the end—because of its rarity, Pearl size matters regarding these gems.
Pearl Necklace Lengths
-
Rope Pearl Necklace:
40 inches or longer. Typically, two or three strands of pearls with various knots. -
Opera Pearl Necklace:
30 inches to 36 inches long. Usually, two strands of pearls are worn for formal occasions. -
Matinee Pearl Necklace:
20 inches to 24 inches long. Generally worn with daytime or more casual wear. -
Princess Pearl Necklace:
17 inches to 18 inches long. A longer choker version and the most popular of necklace lengths. -
Choker Pearl Necklace:
About 16 inches. It can be worn on both casual and formal occasions.

Types of Metals
When it comes to fine jewelry, the metal you select is an important choice. In today's jewelry industry, many different types of metals are commonly used in manufacturing. There are several factors to consider when choosing the right metal for your fine jewelry purchase, such as budget, durability and personal preference. In a diverse market, the metal types are divided into the precious metal family and the alternative metal family.
Precious
Precious metals are rare and have a high economic value due to various factors, including their scarcity, use in industrial processes, financial stability, and thier roles throughout history. Silver, Gold and Platinum are the most valued among these metals.
Alternative
Alternative metals are unique because these metal types are used in other applications outside the jewelry industry, like machinery, surgical tools, and artificial joint replacements. Alternative metals are mainly used in men's wedding bands in the jewelry industry.
Precious Metals Available at Diamonds Direct
Platinum
Platinum is a naturally white metal that maintains its color and finish for a lifetime. Platinum is also a hypoallergenic metal because few alloys are used to make the metal jewelry quality. Platinum reigns supreme in the jewelry industry because it is a solid, heavy metal that will maintain its density for generations.
Though platinum is dense, it is still very malleable- which works in the ring's favor. When a platinum ring is scratched, bumped, dropped, or nicked, the platinum moves to the side and can be polished back into place to look like new. Many jewelers refer to platinum as 'heirloom quality" for this reason.
Gold
Gold is a precious metal that is naturally yellow. It comes from the earth as a very soft metal mixed with alloys, making it hard to use in jewelry design. The karat measurement denotes the ratio of gold to alloys. For example, 24 karat gold is pure gold, 18 karat gold is 75% pure gold, and 14 karat gold is about 58.33% pure gold.
By mixing in various alloys, gold can also appear in different colors, such as pink (or rose), black, green, red, and, most commonly, white gold. White gold gets its white tint by combining yellow gold with alloys like palladium, nickel, and zinc. A white gold ring can be re-dipped in rhodium easily and often to help maintain its white finish. A white gold piece of jewelry is also dipped in rhodium once it is polished and completed. This makes a white gold piece of jewelry rival a platinum piece. Through time, it is common for the rhodium plating to wear off the ring's surface and reveal a more yellow patina.

Precious Stones vs. semi-precious Stones
Though Diamonds Direct is synonymous with diamonds, we are proud to offer an extensive collection of precious and semi-precious gemstones. From loose stones to completed jewelry pieces- we have a collection of colored stones that will exceed your expectations. Our skilled diamond experts are also highly knowledgeable with colored gemstones. They will help you choose the perfect colored gemstone jewelry to suit your budget and your special someone.
Precious
Precious stones are distinguished by their quality, their rarity, and the beauty of their colors. There are only four precious stones: diamond, sapphire, ruby, and emerald. All other stones are therefore called semi-precious stones.
Semi-precious
Semi-precious stones are any other gemstone except precious stones. They can have colors not typical for precious stones, like purple and yellow. Semi-precious stones are divided into minerals, rocks and aggregates, and organic materials.
Sapphire
Blue sapphire belongs to the mineral species corundum. It can be pure blue but ranges from greenish blue to violetish blue. The name “sapphire” can also apply to any corundum that’s not red and doesn’t qualify as ruby, another corundum variety. Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the gem of the 5th and 45th anniversaries.
Ruby
Rubies can command the highest per-carat price of any colored stone, which makes the ruby one of the most important gems in the colored stone market. Traces of Chromium give this red variety of the mineral corundum its rich color. In ancient Sanskrit, ruby was called ratnaraj, or “king of precious stones.” Ruby is the birthstone for July and the gem for the 15th and 40th anniversaries.
Trending Semi-Precious Stones
Amethyst
As the most valued quartz variety, amethyst is in demand for designer pieces and mass-market jewelry. Its purple to pastel hues retains broad consumer appeal. Amethyst is the birthstone for February and the gem for the 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries.
Morganite
Part of the beryl family, like emerald and aquamarine, however, this gemstone is favored for its pink to orange-pink color, caused by trace amounts of the element manganese. However, unlike emeralds, which tend to have many inclusions, morganite gemstones are relatively free of inclusions, making them more eye-appealing and requiring less care.
Topaz
Honey yellow. Fiery orange. Cyclamen pink. Icy blue. In warm or cool tones, topaz is a lustrous and brilliant gem. Precious topaz is a birthstone for November, and blue topaz is a birthstone for December. Blue topaz is the gem of the 4th anniversary, and Imperial topaz is the gem of the 23rd anniversary.

The 4C's of Diamonds
Selecting the perfect diamond starts with a little education. We begin with the 4 C’s: Carat, Cut, Color, and Clarity.
Cut
We often think of a diamond’s cut as its shape, but a diamond’s cut grade is really about how well a diamond’s facets interact with light.
Color
Color evaluation is based on the absense of color. The color scale for diamonds begins with D, representing a colorless diamond, and continues to Z.
Clarity
The process of creating a diamond in nature results in internal and external characteristics called “inclusions” and “blemishes”. The clarity scale begins with flawless and ends with included.
Carat
Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs. A metric "carat" is defined as 200mg. Each carat can be subdivided into 100 points. This allows very precise measurements.
diamond Education
Measurements & proportions
The measurement and proportions of a diamond its overall visual appeal. Some diamonds are cut to emphasize the total carat weight, while others are designed to enhance brilliance and luster. Diamond cutters use the natural growth characteristics of a diamond to determine the optimal proportion to enhance each diamond's unique personality.
Crown
When a diamond’s crown is cut at an ideal angle, the jewel will yield optimal sparkle and fire. If the crown angle is too steep, the jewel will display limited sparkle when viewed from overhead. If the crown angle is too shallow, the diamond could seem flat and translucent.
Girdle
The girdle is typically a thin edge of the diamond where it can be held by the setting.
Table
The top facet of a diamond is the table. If the table is out of proportion to the body of the diamond, it will negatively affect the brilliance and fire.
Culet
The bottom point or facet of the diamond is the culet. A small, flat face at the culet is undesirable for a round cut diamond, but may provide positive characteristics for other shapes and styles.
Depth
Depth of a diamond is measured by drawing an imaginary line between the center of the Top (table) and bottom (culet) facets.
Pavilion
Much like the crown angle, the pavilion affects sparkle and brilliance. When cut properly. the pavilion will emit the most sparkle through the top of the jewel. Cutting too shallow limits sparkle and makes the diamond seem glasslike. If the angle is too large the diamond will not emit optimal sparkle.

Additional diamond grading criteria
Polish
Grading for polish quality refers to the overall craftsmanship of the finished diamond. Are the edges sharp? Are the facets smooth and flat? Polishing wheel marks should not be visible without magnification.
Symmetry
Symmetrical diamonds reflect more light, adding to the overall sparkle. Gemologists review more than 20 different symmetry features in order to grade how perfectly the facets and cut angles align.
Fluorescence
Fluorescence measures the intensity of the light emitted by a diamond under an ultraviolet light. Around 30% of diamonds exhibit some level of fluorescence. Fluorescence can affect the overall value of a diamond.
Certified Diamonds
A certification is an independent quality report on a specific diamond. It is issued by a diamond grading laboratory with no affiliation to any retail outlet, giving the con- sumer a completely objective opinion on the diamond’s quality. The certification in- cludes the exact measurements, proportions, color grade, clarity grade, cut grade and carat weight of the diamond. It also includes specifics that most jewelers do not have the equipment or the knowledge to determine, such as the diamond’s fluores- cence, polish, and symmetry. Each certification has its own number, the date which it was analyzed, and a plot chart which shows the internal and external characteristics of the diamond. The leading diamond laboratory in the world and the one that is setting the diamond grading standard is the Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.).

Diamond Care
Diamonds are remarkably durable, resist scratching, and maintain their brilliance over time. But diamonds aren’t indestructible. They can be chipped by a sharp blow, become loose or lost in a weakened setting, or be damaged by contact with other diamonds.
We recommend wearing diamond jewelry with care. Store it in padded boxes or soft bags separate from other jewelry. Clean your jewelry by wiping it with a lint-free cloth or with warm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush, or by dipping it briefly in a commercial cleaning solution.
At Diamonds Direct, we offer free jewlery cleaning for life. We recommend having your diamond jewelry periodically cleaned and examined by a professional jeweler to maintain its beauty and integrity over time.
